Dr. Mihály Ittzés passed away

It is with deep sadness and sorrow that the Board of Trustees of the Kodály Institute Foundation learned about the death of Dr Mihály Ittzés.

Professor Ittzés, as he was known for many people, was a member of the Board from the beginnings. His spiritual horizon, his literacy, his musicianship and editorial precision have made Kodály’s oeuvre and the deeper connections of his work available to the musical world and to the wider audience through a series of publications, concerts and lectures.

His careful and prudent musicology, initiative skill, intellectual freshness and inimitable humor meant a reliable value and point of reference for a multitude of students, colleagues, national and international musical organizations. Apart from the scientific examination of a phenomena, the illustrative presentation of historical and literary aspects revealed new dimensions in the analysis of Kodály’s and other composers’ works, be it a major scientific study or a concert catalogue. Through his writings and lectures, many people gained lifelong experiences and got closer to the world of music and Kodály.

At the beginning of his illness, he suspended his mandate in the Board with such a fairness – as was very typical of him. But together with him we trusted in his return. However, heavenly and earthly help proved to be little, and we now face the inconceivable truth: we can no longer expect his personal presence. Yet, the never-to-pay debt and duty remains with us: nurturing, pursuing and preserving his intellectual heritage, its unfinished initiatives, in oral and written ways, but especially in music. Rest in peace.

On behalf of unworthy successors and aspiring guardians,

the Board of Trustees of the Foundation for the Kecskemét Kodály Institute
